Music Theory and Composition
Our Theory/Composition concentration is headed up by Dr. Michael Linton. The School of Music is home to a wide variety of music composers from jazz to classcial to contemporary and new music, with each area guided by one of our highly qualified faculty. Take theory classes from composer Dr. Michael Linton heralded by Opera News for his song cycle Carmina Catulli: as“a cycle of seventeen songs that burst with bold originality” or our Grammy award winning theory professor Dr. Cedric Dent. The Theory and Composition department director is Grammy-nominated composer Dr. Paul Osterfield. The School of Music also has a thriving Jazz community with strong jazz theory and composition headed up by Jamey Simmons, award winning jazz trumpet and composition professor.
